Solar Incentives

Residents of San Francisco who are interested in installing solar panels should know that there are many solar incentives available including tax credits, rebates, and net metering. In this article we will outline some of the major Solar Incentives available to residents of San Francisco and California.

  • Federal Tax Credits
  • Net Metering
  • Solar Rebates
  • Cost of Solar Panels in San Fran

Federal solar investment tax credits

When you install solar panels in San Francisco, another of the Solar Incentives available include, the federal solar investment tax credit will help offset the cost. It’s commonly referred to as the ITC investment tax credit. As of 2020, the federal tax credits available to San Francisco residents is up to 20% off the cost of the installation of a solar panel system including permits, labor, and equipment. For example, if your installation cost $20,000 you would receive a tax credit of $5,200 we should note that this tax credit will drop to 22% by the end of 2022.

Using Net Metering in San Fran

Net metering allows you to claim up to a full retail rate credit for the amount of excess electricity your solar panels produce that you send back into your local energy grid. Net metering our net energy metering NEM is set at a near full retail rate instead of the exact rate as the state of California recently I’m in that they’re long and implemented NEM 2.0.

This legislation resulted in a changing policy and there’s a new non-bypassable charge set at 3 cents per kilowatt meaning you don’t get the same as you used to under the first version of NEM however this shouldn’t turn you off the concept of using net metering as it provides you the opportunity to earn money while generating and comforting your electricity costs.

With these tax credits, you’re obliged to set up TOU (Time Of Use Billing) this means that your energy bills will vary depending on what time of the day it is in most demand. When you utilize a NEM, the total kilowatt-hours of energy, you use and what you send to your local electricity company and then netted every month. Anytime you go over the amount that you sent to the greatest by the end of last year, cover the balance over the life of your solar system

Efficiently using a NEM in California can prove very cost-effective, especially when you’re pairing it with a highly effective TOU billing system your ability to pump energy into the grid during off-peak hours can dramatically enhance your savings. I have questions talk to your solar panel installation expert as they can fully explain the benefits of net metering and they can also help you design and construct a solar paneling system that will maximize your savings.

California solar rebate programs

Before 2014 California I had one of the most attractive solar rebate programs in the US this was known as the CSI are California soldier initiative these rebates run out in 2014 but up to that point, it’s encouraged enough Californians to install solar that the solar energy capacity of the grid now stands it over three terawatts. Incentives remain in place for lower-income Californians, and they can use water known as the MASH or SASH programs.

There is one solar tax credits program still running in California, and it’s attached to a property tax exemption for anyone who installed solar PV. This is a pretty neat perk when implemented correctly will increase your home or properties value sometimes by up to 70% of the installation costs so if your sort of handling results in your properties price increasing this can be offset by up to 70%, for example, you install a solar paneling system that costs 20,000 your property tax credits should be anything up to $14,000.

California also has another program known as an SGIP which is their solar battery storage program anyone who installs a battery storage system with a capacity of less than kilowatts eligible to receive an incentive of up to 25 cents for every hour that is power is stored when on the SGIP incentive

The SASH Program (Single-Family Affordable Solar Homes)

They designed the SASH program to encourage single-family homeowners to install solar paneling it’s run by an organization called grid alternatives who are nonprofits and they provide low-income areas with green energy jobs and green energy job training

Key requirements – SASH program

  • Qualifiers for the SASH program will automatically get an incentive of $3 for every single lot of solar paneling they installed
  • For example, if you install a 6 KW system you will instantly get an incentive of $18,000 which is going to cover the entire cost of your solar paneling
  • To get this order money, you need to meet the following criteria:
  • You need to be a homeowner and live in the home you need to be getting your electricity from San Diego gas and electric Southern California Edison or Pacific gas and electric

  • Last but not least, your household income needs to be below 80% of what’s known as the area median income

The MASH Program – (multi-family affordable solar homes)

The California government is also aware that some people are lucky enough to own multifamily homes. It entitles these people to apply for an extensive grant program designed to help them retrofit multi-family low-income housing developments to install solar paneling. Grants are available for up to one dollar 80 per watt of solar installation are available and if you have questions about this simply log into the California public utility commission website.
